Uwadia in his speech at the 10th International conference of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) held last week in Abuja noted without mincing words that, “We need to pay more attention to how IT can, become a tool for youth empowerment, job creation and employability;
Protect the rights and well being of children; empower the female gender and ensure their full participation in all spheres of social, political and economic activities; assist in building safe and secure environment; improve productivity, generate economic growth, and improve the standard and quality of living”
The varsity don who has been preaching software incubation among the youths told the gathering that unemployment will remain unabated in the country unless the youths were given the right IT tools to face the challenges ahead.
The conference theme, Information Technology for People-Centered Development (ITePED 2011), according to him was chosen to reflect the desire of Nigerians in the areas of youth and graduate unemployment, poverty eradication, and the general well being of citizens.
As the country enters the 51st year of nationhood this year, he said that it is pertinent to ask ourselves the much impact Information Technology has made in the lives of the average Nigerian.
“As professionals, we should not see IT as an end on its own, but as an enabling tool capable of delivering better life for Nigerians and indeed humanity” he said.
He recalled that during the 2010 conference in Asaba, NCS introduced the Research Consortium on Information Technology Innovations (RECITI) as a way of meeting the yearnings and requirements of our members in academics.
The Research Consortium on Information Technology Innovations, he said is an international event of Nigeria Computer Society that brings together young and experienced researchers in Computer Science to discuss research ideas in Information Technology and related fields.
According to him, this is with the collaborative participation of International Centre for Information Technology and Development (ICITD); it is specially designed to provide opportunity for Graduate Students of Computer Science / Information Technology to showcase their on-going research work and network with their peers.
