As over 225 organizations are expected to participate in IPV6 test flight day holding today globally, stakeholders in the Nigerian IT industry at the first ever Nigeria IPv6 roundtable last week renewed their call for the nation to consider the immense benefits Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) offers by ordering immediate transition from internet protocol version 4 to version 6 so as to face challenges ahead.
Meanwhile, hundreds of websites and Internet service providers around the world are billed to join Facebook,Google,Nasdaq,Yahoo,Akamai,Limelight Networks, and others to participate in the first global trial of the new IPv6, being organized by the Internet Society.
However,World IPv6 day participants are coming together to galvanize organizations across the industry including internet service providers, hardware manufacturers, operating system vendors and other web companies to prepare their services for the transition. With IPv4 addresses diminishing to zero level, due to allocation to Asia Atlantic network in February this year, experts said the industry must act fast to accelerate full IPv6 adoption or risk increased costs and limited functionality online for internet users everywhere.
It would be recalled that in February, the last batch of internet protocol version four,IPv4 addresses was allocated at a ceremony in Maimi to Asia Pacific Network by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority,IANA,the organization that oversees the global allocation of internet addresses. For over 30 year now,IPv4 has been the base of the internet and now,IANA says it is almost out of addresses, urging nations in the world to immediately begin transition to IPv6 as a matter of urgency, for them to remain relevant and available in the internet world.
As a strategy to address the imminent danger, the Internet Society, ISOC is set for a test flight on the new order, which entails a 24 hour service migration on IPv6, today as a day set aside by the world body every year to commemorate World IPv6 Day.
According to the Chief Internet Technology Officer for the Internet Society,Leslie Daigle, the increasing enthusiasm of people about the IPv6 day is not coming as a surprise because of the importance attached to it.
“The building interest in and amazing response to World IPv6 Day around the world is extremely encouraging, and highlights the growing momentum behind deploying IPv6,” he said, adding that “We see this test flight as an important step towards ensuring the global Internet can continue to grow and evolve so that it can connect billions of new users and devices.”
In his goodwill message, the Chairman of Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria,ALTON,Engr. Gbenga Adebayo said transiting from IPv4 to IPv6 requires making the software routers smooth on switching and transmission sides. For the implementation of IPv6,he said “operators are ready but for some peculiar challenges such as multiple taxation, insecurity of their equipments, high cost of operation in Nigeria, they find it difficult to switch on IPv6, even after receiving licence to operate.
“If these are not addressed, he said that the pace of migration may be slowed down than expected."
