DSTv unveils mobile decoder

TOP pay-TV operator,DSTV Mobile last week introduced mobile television decoder for Nigerian consumers.With the product called “Drifta”,Nigerian subscribers can enjoy television anywhere at any time.
Unveiling the new product,DSTV Details Nigeria Chairman,Adewunmi Ogunsanya said the launch of the new mobile decoder from DSTv Mobile,follows a long line of technology innovations such as DStv Mobile,High Definition decoders and integrated customer services tools.According to him,the concept was born out of the desire of the company to take its customers far away from the usual stress they go through in traffic jams, especially those on busy roads like Lagos.
With this offer, non-DStv subscribers can also purchase a Drifta and subscribe to one of three bouquets – the Free bouquet, the Mini and the Maxi bouquet, DStv Premium subscribers on the other hand will have access to the Maxi Plus bouquet at absolutely no additional charge after paying only for the Drifta hardware.”
Subscribers in DStv Mobile network coverage areas including Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan,Port Harcourt,Onitsha,Asaba,Aba,Benin City,Kaduna and Enugu will have unlimited access to over 15 channels on the DStv Mobile DVB-H network.
He said the introduction was an addition to the continuous efforts of DSTV to transform the way Nigerian consumers access news,information and entertainment,by ensuring that they have access to all the latest breaking television news in real time through direct to home Digital Satellite technology.“When we introduced DStv Mobile on DVB-H allowing for the digital terrestrial broadcast of live television channels to mobile telephones in 2007 it was groundbreaking, and with the launch of the Drifta,we are yet again making history.
A new technology such as mobile television requires significant amounts of investment – however it is an investment that we are committed to make to ensure that Nigerians have access to the latest media and technology available.”
The mobile TV decoder,Drifta receives the DStv Mobile,DVB-H broadcast signal and relays it over WiFi to a range of WiFi capable devices like laptops, PCs,tablets such as the iPad, smartphones,iPhones and iPods.According to Ogunsanya, Drifta supports Windows and the iOS devices.In the future additional devices such as the Blackberry OS, Symbian 3 and Android applications will also be supported.
Also speaking on the new product, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, Joseph Hundah said “The development and introduction of new technology is key to ensuring that DStv subscribers get more enjoyment and control of their television viewing.This always remains at the core of the companies mission and vision.
On his part, General Manager of DStv Mobile, Mayo Okunola says “I am thrilled to be able to offer DStv Premium subscribers such an exciting value added option.The Drifta will be available at Multi choice offices and the service can be activated via Multi choice call centre or the DSTv Mobile website.
