Liverpool decided not to sign Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux on Thursday night after the player failed a medical earlier in the day.
The 25 year-old signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer after the club found nothing wrong with the player’s fitness.
“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs,” said Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager, who signed Demba Ba from West Ham on Thursday.
“He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”
Liverpool had been pursuing Marveaux since February and had a deal in place, only for the medical team to refuse to sign off the move.
The club have become very cautious about signing players with injury problems after Alberto Aquilani arrived from Roma in 2009 carrying a problematic ankle injury.
